Fluke are a UK band that have been making electronic music for almost 20 years. They formed in the late 1980s and the original line-up consisted of Jon Fugler, Mike Tournier and Mike Bryant.
Their first single was released as a white label and was called “Island Life”, but failed to attract much, if any, interest. They continued to write music and released two further white labels – “Thumper” and “Joni/Taxi”. The buzz surrounding these singles got the band a record deal with Creation Records.
In 1991 they released their first album, “The Techno Rose Of Blighty”, and the single “The Bells”, after which they abandoned their deal with Creation and signed up with Virgin offshoot
Circa Records.
After a two year break, Fluke released the single (“Slid”)that brought them to the notice of the country’s clubbers when it was picked up by
Sasha and included on his Renaissance mix CD no fewer than 3 times in various mixes. They followed this with another classy single,
”Electric Guitar”, before releasing their second album, “Six Wheels On My Wagon”. The album was more housey than “Techno Rose…”, and was well received by the music press.
They also produced the first of what would be many Bjork remixes with their stunning interpretations of
”Big Time Sensuality”.
In 1994 Fluke released a live album,
”The Peel Sessions”, which included many of their singles recorded in the BBC studios for John Peel’s legendary radio show.
Flukes third proper studio album “Oto” followed in 1995. This was a less commercial offering than “Six Wheels…”, but still offered up their highest charting singles in
”Bullet” and
”Tosh”.
In 1996 Fluke were asked to provide a track for the classic Playstation 2 game “Wipeout 2097”. They came up with
”Atom Bomb”, which they then released as a single that reached the heights of the UK top 20. This track went on to become the focal point of their fourth album, “Risotto”.
